Alannah Hill buckles: 'PETA intimidated me into consent'
Monday, August 17, 2009
Renowned Melbourne fashionista Alannah Hill has finally succumbed to pressure from the violent vegan lobby People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and will withdraw the use of fur trim in her designs following a coordinated cyber-bullying campaign that included over 4500 abusive emails and death threats.
'After 4500 intimidating and abusive emails, the decision not to use rabbit fur AS A TRIM was made for me by the one that threatened my seven-year-old son, Edward. They wanted him to burn in hell,' she told The Age newspaper.
The designer was forced to change her email address after the attacks and was so alarmed by the group's tactics she contacted the Victorian Attorney-General and Chief Comissioner.
'I believe cyber-bullying needs to be addressed and treated as a criminal offence. Basically, I was intimidated into consent.''
Intimidated by PETA into consent? Who would have thought?
The gloating lobby responded to her forced surrender with this spin:
'Great news for all you PETA Files readers down under: Australian fashion designer Alannah Hill has agreed to stop using rabbit fur in her collections'.

She was using fur TRIMMING for chrisakes. If I see them in Melbourne again I'm going down with a tofu gun to shoot the lot of them.
4500 abusive emails to a sole designer is PETA at its terrorizing best.
We believe Ms Hill should have resisted the pressure although obviously receiving threats to ones child is a concern.
PETA founder Newkirk has stated before that she believes that 'at PETA we've always made the point that the most important thing you can do in life is to be kind.'

But as we all know actions speak louder than words. Ms. Newkirk has a lot to answer for.
Making death threats aimed at 7 year old children. Now this is PETA at it's finest. This is what PETA would like us all to be like??
Now I'm not the sharpest pencil in the tray so maybe someone can explain to me why this outrageous case hasn't made the news?
Some media reported on the harassment but there was precious little available on her forced surrender and the ethics surrounding the group's modus operandi. Disgraceful.
Hi Karen- I am going to tell you that this is not unusual PETA tactic. Mail bombing, threats, lying, half truths, vandalism would be all considered part of the normal business day for PETA. This is nothing new.
I am surprised however that Alannah Hill gave up. I though she was tougher than that.
Many say that PETA has crossed the line from animal rights activism to “cult like” behavior. And former PETA members have claimed that they were subjected to an extreme process of indoctrination.
Newkirk on former employees calling PETA "the cult of Newkirk"
"If you put the cult stuff in [your article] nobody will take what we do seriously."
"PETA employees are subjected to intimidation and brain-washing techniques on a daily basis. One former employee likened the place to a "concentration or re-education camp". It would seem that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals cares very little for the human animal."
