PETA targets Byron Bay set
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Tacky vegan lobby People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is attempting to forge a connection with the coastal NSW town of Byron Bay by urging its Mayor to introduce a 'vegetarian day' once per week.
The group wrote a letter last week to Byron Mayor Jan Barham urging her to proclaim one day a week as a vegetarian day to 'help fight climate change by changing people's diets.'
'Byron Bay has a golden opportunity to lead the charge for a greener Australia', claimed a PETA employee.
'The best thing that any of us can do to protect our health, animals and the Earth is to go vegetarian.'
Byron Bay is a popular surfing haven that lies near Australia's most easterly point. It is renowned for its beauty and cosmopolitanism.
Comment is being sought from the Major.
UPDATE: Ms. Barnham has told this site local government has no power to institute PETA's proposal.

Typical PETA. No idea. The public want LESS government in their lives not MORE.
The fastest way for that mayor to lose office is to try to tell the good folk of Byron Bay what they should and shouldn't eat, however she dresses it up.
If PETA weren't so busy alienating the public they might be able to encourage people to take a walk to the local butcher and leave the car at home.
If they weren't so extreme they could compromise and suggest people give some thought to giving up 2 meat meals a week.
But no, PETA has to go over our heads and try to con a local politician into abusing her position to guilt-trip people into doing what PETA dictates. Wonder what they'll offer as a carrot...
Wonder if the mayor will be silly enough to go for it.

Check the update above.
Ingrid must be furious.
Knowing the area well Byron has no affinity whatsoever with PETA. Nice try but no cigar.
Yes I think it would be 'steer clear of Ingrid week' atm lol.
